Darling Island

Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority was responsible for overseeing the development of Darling Island, on behalf of the NSW State Government, as part of an urban regeneration strategy for the Pyrmont peninsula.

Darling Island comprises 4.9 hectares of prime, waterfront land with uninterrupted views back to the CBD and north to the Harbour Bridge.

It is part of the larger, Pyrmont precinct comprising commercial, retail and residential developments featuring award-winning, adaptively re-used heritage wharves, bond stores and new architecture.

Stage one, built by Multiplex, included the construction of three waterfront apartment buildings and a new public space (Ballaarat Park) and jetty at the northern tip. It was completed in 2004.

Stage two, built by Mirvac, included a six-level commercial building tenanted by Fairfax Media, a five-level residential building and more new public space (Metcalfe Park). They were completed in 2005 and 2006, respectively.

Stage three, called Workplace 6 and developed by the Citta Property Group, is a six-level commercial building and a world leader in sustainable building design.

Tenanted by Google and Accenture, the building was the first in NSW to be awarded a six-star rating for office design by the Green Building Council. It was completed in 2009.

Darling Island is now a mix of residential, commercial and public space, including more than two hectares of open space and foreshore promenade.
