AUTHORITY NEWS

The Rocks Retail Strategy

Following feedback received from tenants and other stakeholders after the Business Development and Information evening on 8 June 2011, the Authority has implemented further consultation measures including more dialogue with both retail tenants and market stallholders.

Archaeological remains uncovered188 Cumberland St dig siteThe Rocks News
The Authority's archaeologists are undertaking an excavation at 188 Cumberland Street, The Rocks. Initial excavations carried out last year exposed sandstone footings for a building dating back to the mid-nineteenth century. A sandstone box drain, dating to around the 1840s was also exposed.

The current excavations have continued to expose more of these structures by removing material from a demolition in the mid-1920s. Further investigations hope to uncover phases representing early European occupation including the 'lines'¾a series of convict-occupied housing.

The Rocks Pop-Up ProjectPopup Rocks News
The Rocks Pop-Up project has hit the halfway mark of the six month trial with creative industries, artisans and designers continuing to temporarily occupying vacant spaces in the precinct. The project reinforces The Rocks as a place for unique, bespoke and locally distinctive work, and a place of innovation and creativity in Sydney.

Pop-Up participant Wendy Murray, a fashion and homewares designer, will temporarily take up residence at 139 George Street while the Authority secures a long term tenant. Also, a 'call to artists' is being put out on FBI Radio to fill shops 23 and 27 in Nurses Walk for a six week stint, and 13 Cambridge Street will welcome four artists from the Artists Residency Program, supported by Arts NSW.

During their time in The Rocks, the Pop-Up participants leverage their own community and social media networks to present exhibitions, events and workshops which we anticipate will attract an audience to The Rocks that might not otherwise have discovered our unique heritage precinct.

There is also a series of small business forums covering topics such as small business development and social media¾and all The Rocks tenants are invited. The next forum on Thursday 18 August will look at how social media can be leveraged to support small business. To learn more, share some great ideas and connect further with these newcomers to The Rocks community, click here.

The Rocks visitation
In June 2011, people movements in the precinct increased by 2.9% to 1,076,948, when compared to June 2010. The 12-month rolling people movements to The Rocks from June 2010 to May 2011 decreased by 1.1% to 13,793,491.

We anticipate the hugely successful Aroma Festival last weekend will have raised the annual visitation figure.

The Rocks Police: Top tips for avoiding credit card fraud
DO contact your merchant processor immediately if you suspect a fraud.
If you have any reason to suspect a transaction, contact your merchant processor immediately and advise them of the situation.

DO ask for more identification if you are suspicious.
If you are in any doubt, ask for more identification. The customer may say they don't have any, or may produce fraudulent identification that matches the card, but it will give you a greater chance of spotting a fraudulent card.

DO be wary of a customer who wants to use multiple cards.
Sometimes offenders will try to use multiple cards to keep them under the floor limit for larger purchasers. If this happens, seek authorisation even though each card would be under the floor limit.

DO check the security features on the card.
Some counterfeit cards are of very high quality. Be familiar with the security features of the various cards and look for them.

For more information, contact The Rocks Local Area Command on 8220 6399.

SUSTAINABILITY NEWS

The Rocks waste management trialWaste bin The Rocks News
The Authority wants to improve waste management in the precinct and provide more effective and environmentally sustainable options for tenants.

In July, a new and sustainable program for managing waste in The Rocks was launched. There are new coloured bins in the waste rooms to make it easier to recycle, as well as a cardboard compactor in the Mill Lane facility. The Authority is also planning to install a composter to process all organic waste. The Greenway Lane garbage room no longer accepts general waste¾it is now a 100 per cent recycling facility for mixed recyclables, paper and cardboard.

A waste audit conducted earlier this year found that around 80 per cent of the contents of a general waste bin could have been recycled. The image to the right shows a typical general waste bin before the program launched.

We encourage everyone to become a part of the Rocks recycling program so that together we can fill those recycling bins!
