Sydney Learning Adventures

Thank you for taking the time to discover Sydney Learning Adventures' extensive range of school excursions and education programs.

As an initiative of Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, Sydney Learning Adventures' vision is to create quality educational excursions that are enriching, diverse, safe, accessible and sustainable.

rocks discovery tourSydney Learning Adventures (SLA) brings the history of Australia, NSW and Sydney to life for thousands of students every year.

All SLA's excursions are developed by teachers and implemented by our dynamic and interpretive guides. They are also curriculum-linked and designed for all stages of learning (kindergarten to year 12) providing an interactive, multi-layered learning experience for students.

SLA Term 1 2012 Prize Winner 
Congratulations to Hoxton Park High School of Hoxton Park, the winner of our book prize for term 1 2012.

Thanks to everyone who filled in a program evaluation form which will be automatically entered into a draw for our book prize each term.

Bangabaoui is back!
SLAWe're pleased to announce that the Bangabaoui Aboriginal harbour cruise has returned. Take your class out on the Mari Nawi to Belanglewool/Clark Island to discover natural caves, fish traps and bush soap, and hear stories of the local Aboriginal people.

Mari Nawi
, which means 'big canoe' is the newest addition to the Tribal Warrior fleet of vessels and can carry up to 180 passengers. During the two-hour program students will also get the opportunity to learn an Aboriginal song and dance.

Bangabaoui, which means 'together we will paddle' is a partnership between Sydney Learning Adventures and The Tribal Warrior Association. The Tribal Warrior Association is a non-profit community group initiated and directed by Aboriginal Australians.

Teacher preview at Reynolds' Cottages

Reynolds' Cottages

You are invited to a FREE teacher preview of Reynolds' Cottages and Sydney Learning Adventures' programs on Thursday 12 July from 2pm to 3.30pm. The preview will commence at The Rocks Discovery Museum, Kendall Lane, The Rocks. Afternoon tea will be provided.

Dating back to around 1823, Reynolds' Cottages is the second oldest building in The Rocks and will be the venue for five of Sydney Learning Adventures' programs from 1 July while Merchant's House undergoes heritage redevelopment.

Don't miss this opportunity to gain a sneak preview of this rare heritage-listed example of small-scale colonial Georgian architecture. Read more about Reynolds' Cottages and be sure to book your place by 5 July 2012.

Three new guides

New Guides

Sydney Learning Adventures is pleased to welcome three new Aboriginal tour guides who will initially be running The Rocks Dreaming and Bangabaoui tours.

Edward Anderson, William Stevens and Sharon Mason are very passionate about teaching and sharing their wealth of knowledge in Aboriginal culture.

Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority museum and education manager Mel Loe welcomes the new guides. "We are very happy to have three new faces in our casual guide team and look forward to seeing them out in the field running tours."

The Rocks Dreaming

The Rocks DreamingLooking for a great introduction to Aboriginal Sydney? Consider The Rocks Dreaming, a two-hour walking tour which:

  • imparts Aboriginal knowledge linked to school curriculum outcomes
  • brings to life the Aboriginal stories of The Rocks
  • included a visit to The Rocks Discovery Museum to see an exhibition of life in The Rocks before British settlement.
